Techi Tree dyeing with natural dyes in unique shades

Amami Oshima Island is located in the southern Kyushu Sea, about halfway between Kagoshima City and the main island of Okinawa. The traditional technique of the island of Amami Oshima is the use of the dye from the heirloom plum tree (Techi tree in the dialect of Amami-Oshima) to dye the fabric. The soft reddish hue of the natural dye and
the natural unevenness of the dve are the characteristics of this veing technique.

This unique dye is used to dye T-shirts made of 100% Zimbabwe cotton, 8.5 oz. degree-filled jersey material. Knitted with 14 count/20 gauge straight yarn, the fabric has an even thickness and features a good hand feel and comfort. The fabric has a thick, dependable feel with a tightly packed texture.

A binder neck design is used for the neck to prevent sagging. A binder neck refers to a neck shape in which the body tabric is sewn between difterent fabrics. It is a so comfortable to wear because the back seam does not touch the skin when worn.

Whether used alone or as innerwear, you can enjoy the unique, eye-catching colors of this product.

About Techi Tree dyeing

This is the flower of the Techi tree (wheeled plum).
A member of the rose family, it is named for its wheel-shaped spreading branches and flowers
that resemble plum blossoms. It can be found in various regions. It is an evergreen shrub in the
family Rosaceae, genus Sharimbai, that grows wild near the coast from Miyagi and Yamagata
prefectures and southward to Kyushu and Okinawa. It is resistant to drought and air pollution,
and is often used in Amami as a tide and windbreak forest, as well as a hedge for fields
and grounds.

Techi trees grown in the island's natural environment grow larger than those on the mainland,
with some trunks as large as 30cm in diameter. The core and bark of the trunks of these trees
are boiled to produce a dye solution.

The core and bark of the trunk have a reddish tinge. This color is tannic acid, which is also found
in various plants such as tea, wine, and persimmons. Tannic acid is thought to be a defense substance
that plants use to protect themselves.

The finished dye is then rubbed and dyed by hand by craftsmen using a process that has been handed
down on the island from generation to generation. The GIB line on the left sleeve, which is rubber paint,
is also dyed lightly, giving it a distinctive flavor. The dyed fabric is finished in a deep shade of orange
with depth and austerity
